Pink Floyd Japan CD

The nicest Pink Floyd's CD editions are surely the Japanese ones, because of the presence of the ideograms and of the OBI on them. What is an OBI ? In the beginning, an OBI was a paper strip of about 2" wrapped around the LP covers, with the name of the artist, record and song's title, price in Yen and other information written on it in Japanese. On CDs the OBI is a piece of paper that wraps the jewel case from left to back for about 1" each side, still with the same information provided for an LP. A Japanese CD is considered incomplete without the OBI, and its value decreases. Dates It is common to see 3 dates on the back of the OBI: usually the older one is the date the CD was published in Europe, the second one is the date the CD you've in your hands was printed, and the third one, usually a future date, indicates the expiration of the licence agreement. After this date, the licence can be re-negotiated, and the CD reissued (maybe by a different record company). The issues In Japan, Pink Floyd's CD editions did go through 3 big phases: EMI, SONY and Toshiba. Those issues have always been limited to 2,000-5,000 copies each. Let's analyze each one of them separately. EMI Those are the very first issues, between '86-'89, from "The piper at the gates of dawn" to "The dark side of the moon" included, plus "Opel" by Syd Barrett, a total of 10 pieces. The catalogue numbers looks like CPxx-yyyy.zz where xx is the price class and yyyy is the catalogue number. The optional zz code is found in case of double, triple... editions, to show the last digit of the series. 2 different editions exist, the original and the reprint, which are nearly the same except for the price printed on the OBI: in case of Ummagumma it is 5,600 Yen for the first print and 5,400 for the next. This "habit" to reprint has been lost in the following years: the SONY and Toshiba editions usually change the catalogue number, the OBI and the price when reprinted. "The dark side of the moon" GOLD edition is very nice, same as the American MFSL but with totally different artwork: Pink Floyd, The dark side of the moon GOLD, CP43-5771 SONY SONY and Toshiba periods overlap for some time, with the "division" of titles (or rights, if you like): from "Wish you were here" and next, belonging to SONY, and from "The dark side of the moon" to the beginning belonging to Toshiba, even though in the last years Toshiba did get a few other titles. In the SONY period we find the most unusual things: rare promotional items never published outside Japan, such as a double compilation called "Fate of circle", printed in just 100 copies, and 2 golden editions: "Wish you were here" and "Amused to death", same as American Mastersound, but with different artwork: Pink Floyd, Wish you were here, SRCS-6762 Roger Waters, Amused to death, SRCS-6766 there are even 2 bad-prints retired from the market ("Wish you were here" and "The final cut"). Basically there are 3 series: first xxDP-yyy.z, then xxDP-yyyy.z where xx is the price class, first 32, then 28 even if there are the two famous mistakes on class 35. Lastly, the series SRCS-yyyy.z, where the price class disappears. This is the low value collection, even though some editions like "The division bell" and "Pulse" exist only like this. Also, all editions of David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and "Wet Dream" by Rick Wright are included under the SONY label. Many "Various Artists" compilations with Pink Floyd tracks exist, both official and promotional, and even one CD single of 3" (On the turning away).... 49 pieces in total. It is also important to say that nearly all official editions exist as "samples". The only difference is a small sticker attached on the back of the CD case and the writing "sample" in the inner side of the CD, close to the central hole. TOSHIBA The Toshiba period is the most actual, and perhaps the most sober and prolific, with many editions: 56 pieces. There are 3 main series: the first one, TOCP-yyyy.zz, with prints from "The piper at the gates of dawn" to "The dark side of the moon" the second one, TOCP-yyyyy.zz, that goes up to "A collection of great dance songs", which also include many famous "Various Artists", like "Knebworth" and "Zabriskie point" and all remaining editions of Syd Barrett and Rick Wright. the third one, which only recently became available, goes from TOCP-65731 to TOCP-65744, with the cardboard sleeve replica of the original LP, and has the same titles availability of the second series. Of these titles, the first 9 are also available with the original LP OBI replica, but it is just a publicity stunt from a big Japanese record store. Under Toshiba there aren't high value editions, because they are all recent. Conclusion Collecting Japanese Pink Floyd editions is expensive. There is a total of 118 official editions. As of today, it is nearly impossible to find one under $25, but the average price is about $40, to reach $350 for "Fate of circle", the most rare Japanese CD edition. Di tutte le edizioni dei CD dei Pink Floyd, quelle Giapponesi sono sicuramente le piu affascinanti, sia per gli ideogrammi su di essi stampati, sia per la presenza dell'OBI. Che cos'e' un OBI ? In origine l'OBI era una striscia di carta posta a sinistra e che girava attorno alla copertina degli LP, larga circa 5 cm e con su scritto in Giapponese il titolo del disco, il nome dell'artista, i titoli dei brani, il prezzo in Yen, ed altre informazioni. Nei CD, l'OBI e' rappresentato da una striscia di carta che si avvolge da sinistra al retro del CD per circa 3 cm per lato, sempre con le stesse informazioni. Un CD giapponese e' considerato incompleto senza l'OBI e quindi ne abbatte notevolmente il valore. Le date E' abbastanza comune trovare sul retro dell'OBI 3 date: di solito la piu vecchia indica la data di pubblicazione del CD in Europa, la seconda la data dell'edizione che avete in mano, e la piu recente (di solito futura) indica la data di scadenza della licenza per quell'edizione. Dopo quella data la licenza puo' essere rinegoziata (non necessariamente dalla stessa casa discografica) e quindi ristampato. Le edizioni In giappone, le edizioni OBI dei PF sono passate attraverso 3 grandi fasi: EMI, SONY, Toshiba. Queste stampe sono sempre state in edizioni molto limitate: dalle 2000 alle 5000 copie. Vediamo di analizzarle ciascuna separatamente. EMI Sono le primissime edizioni, datate tra l'86 e l'89, da "The piper at the gates of dawn" fino a "The dark side of the moon" compresi, piu "Opel" di Syd Barrett, per un totale di 10 pezzi. I numeri di catalogo sono quelli che iniziano con CPxx-yyyy.zz dove xx sta per la classe di prezzo ed yyyy il numero di catalogo. Il codice .zz opzionale si trova in caso di edizioni doppie, tripe etc... per indicare il numero finale della serie. Di questi OBI ne esistono 2 edizioni, una stampa originale e una ristampa (di poco tempo dopo) di per se' identiche, dove l'unica cosa che cambia e' il prezzo stampato sull'OBI: nel caso di Ummagaumma si e' passati dai 5600 Yen della prima stampa ai 5400 della successiva. Questa "abitudine" alla ristampa si e' persa negli anni successivi: infatti con le edizioni SONY e Toshiba, quando il CD viene ristampato camba totalmente il numero di catalogo ed il disegno dell'OBI. Di speciale, troviamo l'edizione dorata di "The dark side of the moon", l'equivalente dell' MFSL americana: Pink Floyd, The dark side of the moon GOLD, CP43-5771 SONY Il periodo SONY, ed il successivo, Toshiba, si accavallano per qualche tempo, con la "spartizione" dei titoli (o dei diritti, se preferite): da "Wish you were here" in poi, toccano alla SONY, da "Dark side of the moon" indietro, alla Toshiba, anche se da un paio d'anni a questa parte, la Toshiba e' arrivata ad acquisire qualche altro titolo. Nel periodo SONY troviamo le cose piu strane: da promozionali introvabili e mai pubblicati fuori dal Giappone, come "Fate of circle", una raccolta doppia in sole 100 copie, a 2 edizioni dorate, "Wish you were here" e "Amused to death", equivalenti ai Mastersound Americani, vedi: Pink Floyd, Wish you were here, SRCS-6762 Roger Waters, Amused to death, SRCS-6766 e persino 2 edizioni sbagliate e subito ritirate dal mercato ( "Wish you were here" e "The final cut" ). Principalmente vi sono 3 serie di stampe: prima xxDP-yyy.z, poi xxDP-yyyy.z dove xx e' la classe di prezzo, prima 32, poi 28 anche se esistono i 2 famosi errori con classe 35, e successivamente la serie SRCS-yyyy.z, dove sparisce la classe di prezzo dal numero di catalogo. Questa numerazione e' la piu recente e quindi meno pregiata, anche se certe edizioni come "Division Bell" e "Pulse" esistono solo cosi'. Inoltre sono comprese tutte le edizioni di David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters e "Wet Dream" di Rick Wright. Esistono inoltre alcune raccolte di "Various Artists" con brani dei Pink Floyd, sia ufficiali che promozionali. Esiste persino un CD singolo da 3" (On the turning away).... In totale 49 pezzi. Da notare che quasi tutte le edizioni ufficiali sono anche reperibili come "samples". L'unica differenza sta nel fatto di avere un piccolo adesivo attaccato sul retro e la scritta "sample" sulla parte piu interna del CD, in prossimita' del buco centrale. TOSHIBA Il periodo Toshiba e' il piu attuale e forse il piu sobrio e piu prolifico: ben 56 pezzi. Vi sono 3 serie principali: la prima, TOCP-yyyy.zz, con stampe che vanno da "The piper at the gates of dawn" fino a "The dark side of the moon", la seconda, TOCP-yyyyy.zz, che si estende fino a "A collection of great dance songs", sono compresi anche molti "Various Artists" famosi, come "Knebworth" e "Zabriskie point", e tutte le altre edizioni di Syd Barrett e Rick Wright. la terza, diponibile da pochissimo tempo, da TOCP-65731 a TOCP-65744, con la replica in cartoncino della copertina dell'LP originale, anche lei con gli stessi titoli della seconda. Di questi, i primi 9, sono disponibili anche con la replica dell'OBI originale dell'LP, ma e' solo una trovata pubblicitaria di un grosso negozio Giapponese. Sotto la Toshiba non ci sono edizioni da mozzafiato, anche perche' sono quasi tutte recenti. Conclusione Collezionare edizioni Giapponesi dei Pink Floyd e' sicuramente costoso. In totale si contano ben 118 titoli "ufficiali". Oramai e' praticamente impossibile trovare qualiasi edizione sotto le 50.000 ma il prezzo medio si aggira intorno alle 80.000, per arrivare a punte di $350 per "Fate of circle", sicuramente l'edizione Giapponese su CD piu rara in assoluto. Die schönsten Pink Floyd CDs sind sicherlich die Japanischen Ausgaben. Dies nicht nur wegen ihrer Aufmachung sondern auch wegen des sogenannten OBIs. Was ist ein OBI? Zu Beginn war es ein Papierstreifen von ca 5cm Breite der um die linke Seite der LP-Cover gesteckt wurde und der in Japanischen Schriftzeichen den Namen des Künstlers, den LP-Titel, die Songtitel, den Preis in Yen und noch einige andere Angaben trug. Bei den CDs ist der OBI circa 2,5 cm breit und wird um den linken Rand der CD-Box gefaltet. Er trägt die gleichen Informationen wie bei der LP. Eine Japan-CD ist ohne diesen OBI unvollständig und auch ihr Wert ist dementsprechend geringer. Datumsangaben Auf der Rückseite des OBIs findet man in der Regel drei Datumsangaben: das älteste gibt das Veröffentlichungsdatum im Ursprungsland an, das zweite gibt an wann die CD, die man gerade in der Hand hat, gepresst wurde und das dritte Datum gibt das Ablaufdatum der Lizenz an. Nach diesem Datum kann die Lizenz neu vergeben werden und die CD kann widerveröffentlicht werden (zum Beispiel von einer anderen Plattenfirma) Veröffentlichungen In Japan durchlaufen Pink Floyd CDs 3 grosse Phasen: EMI, SONY und Toshiba. Diese Veröffentlichungen sind in der Regel auf 2000 bis 5000 Kopien limitiert. Schauen wir sie uns einaml an. EMI Das sind die allerersten Veröffentlichungen aus der Zeit von 1986 bis 1989. Von "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" bis einschliesslich "The Dark Side Of The Moon" und "Opel". Genau 10 Stück. Die Katalog-Nummern haben alle die Form CPxx-yyyy.zz. Es existieren 2 verschiedene Ausgaben: das Original und die Wiederveröffentlichung. Der einzige Unterschied ist der Preis der auf dem OBI ausgedruckt ist. Am Beispiel der Ummagumma: 5600 Yen für die Erstausgabe und 5400 Yen für die Zweitausgabe. Dies hat sich jedoch in den folgenden Jahren geändert. SONY und Toshiba benutzen eine neue Katalog-Nummer, einen anderen OBI und drucken auch einen neuen Preis auf. Eine besondere Ausnahme bildet die Dark Side Gold-Edition. Sie entspricht der amerikanischen MFSL hat aber ein völlig anderes Cover: Pink Floyd, The dark side of the moon, Eternity Gold-Edition, CP43-5771 SONY Die Veröffentlichungsphasen von SONY und Toshiba überschneiden sich bezüglich der Titel (oder Rechte) teilweise. Von "Wish You Were Here" und allen folgenden bei SONY und von "The Dark Side Of The Moon" zurück zum Beginn bei Toshiba. Aber in den letzten Jahren werden auch andere Titel bei Toshiba veröffentlicht. Bei SONY finden wir manchmal ungewöhnliche Veröffentlichungen: die seltenste mit OBI ist die 100er Auflage der Doppel-CD "Fate Of Circle" und dann zwei Gold-CDs, "Wish You Were Here" und "Amused To Death". Diese beiden entsprechen der Amerikanischen Mastersound, haben jedoch eine völlig andere Aufmachung. Pink Floyd, Wish you were here, SRCS-6762 Roger Waters, Amused to death, SRCS-6766 Es existieren 2 schlechte Ausgaben die auch vom Markt genommen wurden ("Wish You Were Here" und "The Final Cut"). Alle CDs in einem Pappschuber der dem Original LP-Cover entspricht. Diese Serie wurde inoffiziell nochmals von einem grossen Japanischen Plattenladen mit Extra-OBI veröffentlicht. Bei Toshiba gibt es keine teuren Ausgaben, da alles erst vor kurzem veröffentlicht wurde. Schlussbemerkung Japan-CDs zu sammeln ist sehr teuer. Es gibt insgesamt 118 offizielle Ausgaben. Heutzutage findet man kaum eine CD unter $25. Der Durchschnittspreis liegt bei $40 und geht bis zu $350 für die "Fate Of Circle", der seltensten Japan-CD.
